CHALKE VALEY, Wiltshire

A new extension for a listed Farmhouse in the picturesque Chalke Valley, Wiltshire

To the South of the large open landscapes of Salisbury Plain, lies the Chalke Valley which is altogether softer and more gentle - picture perfect villages with thatched roof cottages complete with roses around the door are all sited along the winding Chalke river feeding fresh watercress beds along its route. This listed farmhouse has under gone many changes and additions in its history and now has had another extension added to make it more user friendly for this family and their ever growing four teenage children.

  • A small, dark kitchen was knocked out and extended to make a large open plan family room incorporating a new hand built kitchen, an informal dining area for family and supper parties and a relaxing seating area which incorporates French doors opening out onto the garden. All the mod-cons of underfloor heating and a family phone charging station where incorporated into the build, whilst still remaining the original character and beautiful features of this charming house. Layers of lighting circuits were included to cover all moods and occasions, topped off perfectly with a long row of fairy lights running around the whole room.

Above the kitchen/family room a Master Suite was formed in the new eaves of the extension – the luxury of an ensuite bathroom, plenty of discreet built in wardrobes and space for a large master bed softened with upholstered headboards, big plumb bed cushions and a cosy bed throw create a wonderful quiet space away from family life.

Finally a new entrance was created which welcomes visitors to a light filled hall with fitted cupboards for plenty of essential storage and a cosy cloakroom all in deep green – perfect for this rural setting.

Classic schemes were used throughout with a nod to the English Country House Style, but kept very simple and understated for today’s living without the excessive frill and fuss of large formal homes. Having recently re-visited the house which is now layered with all the trimmings of family life – books, photo albums, coats, hats and dog paraphernalia, I’m confident that this house will still look as good as it does today as it will in ten years’ time – warm, cosy and lived in – a true home.
